Pfizer supports Sutent for gastrointestinal stromal tumors, malignant and metastatic renal cell carcinoma
Pfizer Inc announced today that it has filed a new drug for cancer medicine SU11248 (sunitinib), known as Sutent, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Pfizer is to obtain FDA approval for Sutent in the treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumors, malignant and metastatic renal cell carcinoma patients whose tumors do not respond or can not tolerate standard treatment options.Diseases for which there is no treatment. Sunitinib is an oral multi-targeted cancer therapy that anti-angiogenic and anti-tumor connects simultaneously stop the blood flow and directly attack tumor cells. About 2,000 patients received Sutent as part of Pfizers clinical trial program. Developed by Pfizer, Sutent also studied alone and in combination with other medications to treat a variety of other
solid tumors, including breast, lung, prostate and colon-rectum.Sutent is one of the first of a new class of drugs that selectively targets multiple protein receptors, called receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK). Inhibition of these RTKs is believed to starve tumors of blood and nutrients needed for growth and simultaneously kill the cancer cells forming tumors.
